Child Care Licensing

Family Child Care Providers

The Cuyahoga County Child Care Licensing Unit licenses and monitors all Family Child Care Providers in Cuyahoga County. A licensed family child care provider is approved to care for up to 6 children in a type B home and up to 12 children in a type A home at one time.  A licensed provider has the option to enter into an agreement with Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) to receive public funds for their childcare services.

There are two types of Child Care Provider homes:

  • Type A Homes can care for up to 12 children at one time with additional staff based on number and age of children. Type A Homes also must have city approvals including zoning, building and fire approvals.
  • Type B Homes can care for up to six at one time. Type B Homes must comply with any applicable city ordinances or other requirements.

For more information about becoming a licensed Type A or Type B provider, please call 216-987-8488, or email CuyahogaChildCareLicensing@jfs.ohio.gov.
